Heaven's Preference: The Healthiest Option

"What is truly delicious is that which will not cause you any harm; that which the Lord God has made.”

This is what Bro. Eli Soriano, Presiding Minister of the Members Church of God International, shared as part of the topic he delivered in one of the Thanksgiving held  at the ADD Convention Center in Apalit, Pampanga,  Philippines.  ADD stands for Ang Dating Daan (The Old Path), Bro. Eli’s award-winning radio and television program.  The program is also translated in different languages to cater the needs of foreign listeners.

Speaking before a congregation of tens of thousands brethren and guests, the preacher mentioned that natural food is the best, citing the sugar cane as one example.

According to an article published online at Green Herbal Remedies (www.greenherbalremedies.com), there are numerous health benefits that people can get from fresh sugar cane. It has low glycemic index (GI), which produce only slight changes in our blood glucose and insulin levels, that anyone can drink its juice without having the guilt of huge calorie intake as compared to other sweet drinks.

Through the years, sugar cane has been a well-known thirst-quencher and provides instant energy to the body. Its juice can provide the adequate nutrition of a skipped meal in a day. It has also been proven to decrease urine acidity and provide relief for persons suffering from enlarged prostate, cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder), and nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys).

Sugar cane is a good source of protein and carbohydrates. It has also the capability to fight breast and prostate cancer and strengthen the kidney and the heart, recent research shows.

According to Bro. Eli, “The natural sugar cane that God made is good, but when it is processed and turned into sugar, we think it is good, but its goodness is only temporary.”

In a study made, it was revealed that sugar can suppress the immune system and weaken the body’s defense against bacterial infection. It can also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, as well as pancreas and kidney damage.

Sugar promotes tooth decay and acidic stomach and contributes to weight gain and obesity. It can even cause free radical formation in the bloodstream and bacterial fermentation in the colon.

New studies show that sugar also speeds up the aging process, causing wrinkles and grey hair. Too much intake of sugar will later lead to diabetes, one of the world’s top killing diseases.

Bro. Eli Soriano, acclaimed as phenomenal preacher through his inimitable Bible Expositions, stressed how artificial flavorings have deceived us that many people today prefer the artificial over the natural ones. Same thing goes with the fast food meals that have become the regular diet of many busy people. Many prefer fast food fried chicken over the healthier options.

Bro. Eli discussed that the best way of cooking meat is what the Lord God has taught the Israelites, just like what is mentioned in Exodus 12:8-9:

“And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.  Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.”

It is a wiser choice to roast meat on fire. Roasting food on charcoal is like coating it with free radicals and exposing the meat in cancer causing elements. The food may apparently taste delicious, but the accumulated harmful effects will later sneak in, causing diabetes, heart attack and stroke.

So do not indulge yourself on the temporary joys and delicious flavors that these meals may bring. There is nothing better than the natural – it will cause us no harm.

Protect Yourself Against The Cold

The cold weather being experienced in the Philippines can be considered nil to the winter that the Americans are experiencing due to polar vortex.  But being a tropical country, the single digit temperature that some parts of the country is experiencing now can be considered much colder than the ordinary.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), cooler mornings are expected to prevail until February.

During this weather, colds, coughs and flu are common, affecting many, especially children.  Here are some tips to protect yourselves during cold weather.

  1. Wear protective coats or jackets, especially when going out.

  2. Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C.  Vitamin C boosts your immune system.  Some food sources are carrot, cabbage, cauliflower, bell pepper, tomato, potato, sweet potato, papaya, guava, strawberry, pineapple, mango and citrus fruits like orange, lemon, dalandan and grapefruit and pomelo.  You can also take vitamin C supplements which can be very beneficial.

  3. Use lukewarm water when taking a bath in the morning.  It will lessen the water’s coldness and boiling the  water kills viruses that thrive during cold weather.

  4. Wash hands properly to prevent the spread of influenza viruses and the likes.

  5. Get enough rest  and manage stress.

May these tips help you as you brace for the colder mornings ahead.

The fist-size serving

In the sixth topic of the indoctrination in Members Church of God International (MCGI), among God’s teachings that Bro. Eli Soriano, the congregation’s Presiding Minister is for Christian to live life in moderation, as an example, in choosing one’s clothes or accessories.

Even eating should be done in moderation, the international preacher stated.  Excessive eating leads to obesity that causes different illnesses and health problems.  According to the World Health Organization website, obesity is defined as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that may impair health.  It is considered to reach an epidemic proportions causing 2.8 million deaths each year, globally.

Dr. Joseph Mercola, stated on his website, www.mercola.com that obesity put more people at risk of certain diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and certain cancers.

To counter obesity and its negative effects, Bro. Eli suggests that those whose works require lesser physical effort and do not get physically tired should eat too much – food that is not more than the size of one’s close fist.

The American Heart Association also suggests this.  In the organization’s website, www.heart.org,  reducing portion sizes will help one prevent overeating. “For most foods, a reasonable portion is ½ to 1 cup – about the size of a woman’s fist.”   Certain exceptions are enumerated, such as meat, chicken and fish that servings should be half the size; while plain vegetables can be taken in larger portions, since it is filling and low in calories.

Add colors to your diet

As colors add life to a piece of art, so does colors give to a person’s body.  The natural colors to be specific.

The bright, glowing colors of the fresh fruits and vegetables do not only give pleasure to the eyes, it also serve as a code on what nutritional values it give.

Bro. Eli Soriano, Presiding Minister of Members Church of God International (MCGI) believes in this. During one of the consultations of the Church's regular Saturday Thanksgiving, the international evangelist states that natural food can aid in the prevention and healing of certain diseases.

This is also backed up by studies made by health and nutrition experts.

According to nutritionist Linda Foster on a web article written by Caroline Jones, dated April 17, 2012 on Mirror.co.uk, eating a wide variety of colored, fresh produce is a great way to have glowing skin, a slimmer shape and helps the body fight diseases.

When disaster strikes

The Philippines is on the top of the world’s news headline once again as Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) wreaks havoc in the islands of Visayas.  The monster storm brought the strongest winds ever recorded at 235 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 275 kilometers per hour.   Sea surge reach almost 15 meters (45ft.)  and amount of rainfall reach 400mm (15.75 inches).   Millions were affected and displaced; thousands died, injured and missing.

Homes, historic edifices and even government offices were damaged.  Electric supplies are cut.  Survivors face water and food shortage.

CNN reporter Anderson Cooper on his own program “Anderson Cooper 360°, on its broadcast in the morning  of November 16, 2013 highlighted the resilience of the Filipinos and stated, “Not just to survive this storm but they’re strong to have survived the aftermath of the storm for a week now with very little food, with very little water, with very little medical attention.”

One of the aftermaths of the typhoon, or in any disaster for that matter is the health crisis.

For instance, the devastating magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Haiti in January2010, brought cholera epidemic two months after.    The Epidemiological Update released on October 19, 2013 by the World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization, it is revealed that there total are 682, 573  cases of cholera  in the country, wherein 379,870 (55.6%) of these are hospitalized and 8,330 of which died.  After the release of the report to the present, there are more than a thousand new cases and less than a hundred deaths.

The same thing is feared in the areas affected by typhoon Haiyan.  Water-borne diseases may have flourished in the devastated areas.   To date, officials from the Department of Health reported cases of dysentery.  As defined from the website of Medical News Today , dysentery is an intestinal inflammation that causes severe diarrhea and mucus or blood in the feces.  It can cause dehydration and can later cause death if not treated immediately.

One factor that causes these diseases is the lack of safe, clean drinking water.

After a disaster, when drinking water begins to scarce, here are some tips from the website of the Federal Emergency Management Office:

  1. Safe drinking water sources in the house includes water tanks, pipes and those you have prepared before a disaster.  Never use water from toilet flush, radiators, swimming pools or water beds.

  2. Shut off your main water valve to prevent incoming water if there are reports of contaminated broken sewage lines.

The site also includes some emergency outdoor water sources like rainwater, streams, river, ponds and natural spring but be sure to treat the water before drinking it.  Avoid dark water with odor.

Here are some common ways to treat your water in rare, emergency situation to make it safe for drinking:

Boiling

In a large pot or kettle, bring water to a rolling boil for one minute.  Let it cool before drinking.  It will taste better if you put back the oxygen to it.  You can do it by pouring the water back and forth between two clean containers.

Chlorination

Use 1/8 teaspoon of regular household liquid bleach that contains 5.25 to 6 percent of sodium hypochlorite to a gallon of water.  Stir and let stand for 30 minutes.  The water should have a slight bleach odor.  If it is not, repeat the process and let it stand for another 15 minutes.  If it still fail, discard it and find other water source.  Do not use scented or color-safe bleaches or bleaches with added cleaners.

Distillation

It involves boiling water and collecting the vapor that condenses back to the water.  Fill a pot half-full.  Tie a cup to the handle of the pot’s cover so the cup will hang right-side-up when the pot's lid is upside-down.  Boil the water for twenty minutes and the water that drips from the lid into the cup is already distilled.

An illustration is provided to understand the process:

If you are going to store the water after these treatment, better put it on clean, sealed containers for your safety.

A normally active person needs to drink at least half gallon of water everyday.  Water is also needed for food preparation and sanitation so it is essential to have enough supply of water.

Passive Smoking: Dangers in Camouflage

Having understood the dangers that smoking causes, some smokers decide to quit early than to see and feel the ill-effect of smoking in the latter part of their lives. This is a wise and healthy decision. But to quit smoking is not enough to save ourselves from the harmful effects of smoking. Studies show that passive smoking is as harmful as smoking itself. We may not know it, but dangers can be lurking in our homes, in our workplace, in the restaurants where we eat, almost everywhere.

Passive smoking, also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ets) or second hand smoke (shs) is breathing in or inhaling the smoke from the cigarettes that other people are smoking. This is made up of the side stream smoke or the smoke from the tip of the cigarette and the mainstream smoke, or the smoke that has been inhaled and exhaled by the smokers.

In a mass indoctrination session held by the Presiding Minister of Members of the Church of God International, locally known as Ang Dating Daan (The Old Path), Bro. Eliseo Soriano cites passive smoking as an example on the topic he is discussing about the proper apparel of a woman. That woman should live with simplicity, shunning away from adornments and costly array and wear modest apparel. If the woman violates this rule, it is not only her who will suffer the consequences of her violation but the man as well.

When a woman wears revealing, sexy clothes, exposing much of her skin and her body, it is not only her that commits sins, but also those men who will look at her with desire. In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus Christ said that when a man looked into a woman with desire, he is already committing adultery in his heart.

As proof, Bro. Eli cites 2 Peter 2:14, “Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin…“ When a man is guilty of this sin, he is committing adultery and he doesn’t stop from doing sin. He was charge of the offense because the woman break God’s rule.

Bro. Eli likened this to passive smoking. Smoking causes harm not only on the smoker, but to those who are near him, too.

“The toxins from the cigarettes you smoke go to your lungs, but much more toxins and poisons were absorbed by the people around you. They are the ones who are more distressed by the poison on the cigarette smoke that you emit.”

According to recent studies, tobacco smoke contains over 4000 particles and gas chemicals. It includes ammonia, which is used in toilet bowl cleaners; cadmium from the automobile battery; carbon monoxide that is also emitted by refrigerators and vehicles; cyanide, a poison used in illegal fishing; formaldehyde that is used in embalming; tar, a component in the asphalt; the addicting nicotine, and vinylchloride that is used in making plastics.

It also includes the cancer-causing benzopyrene, as well as 60 other cancer-causing substances.

An article written in www.smokingstatistics.org reveals the following facts about passive smoking:

  • 53,000 non-smokers are killed annually because of passive smoking

  • Worsens the condition of those with asthma

  • Increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer by 25%

  • Imposes a 50-60% threat of incurring heart disease

  • Affects the mental growth of children

  • Kids living at home with smokers are more prone to bronchitis

  • Causes sleep disturbances among pregnant women

  • Causes middle ear infections in children

  • Increases the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women by 70%

  • Increases the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment in those 50 years old and above

  • Increases the risk of Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract)

  • Diminishes a person’s sense of smell

  • Puts the children at risk of meningococcal infections

  • Increases the risk of miscarriage

A baby on the womb of a smoking mother maybe poisoned resulting to low birth weight or premature birth. Inhalation of tobacco smoke can lead to sudden infant death syndrome, asthma and lung infections such as bronchiolitis and tuberculosis, as well as poor development and learning difficulties.

Thousands of people have the habit of smoking since centuries ago. But concerns about passive smoking or secondhand smoke started only during the 1970’s.

Authorities of many countries are now working against passive smoking. On June 2004, the Norwegian government put smoking bans in all places that serve food and drinks. The same law took effect in Italy, Sweden, Denmark and other European countries and US. Later, laws put even more restrictions on smoking. Smoking was prohibited on workplaces, malls and shopping areas, church and hospital zones as well as public transportation.
